Kerala Wildlife Tourism

Kerala tourist attraction Wild life

There are many forests in Kerala which are full of wild life. There are also many wild life sanctuaries in Kerala where it is possible to see wild animals in their natural Habitat.  Some of these sanctuaries are also open to tourism. Some of the prominent wild life destinations in Kerala are as follows:-

Thekkady : This is the best place in Kerala for tourists to see wild animals. Thekkady has a moderate climate throughout the year. The lake at Thekkady is an ideal place where people can enjoy a boat ride and see wild animals at the same time.  Wild Elephants are mostly seen here. Sometimes it is also possible to see Bison, Wild Boar, wild langurs, otters, deer etc.

Eravikulam National Park: This national park is situated very close to Munnar in Kerala. It is here that the endangered species called the Nilgiri Tahr can be seen. In this national park it is not possible to see other wild animals.  Although entry of private vehicles is not allowed, special vehicles belonging to the sanctuary take people inside the national park. The vehicles also take visitors close to Anamudi peak the highest point in South India. From here one can have spectacular view of Munnar hills and Anamudi peak.

Chinnar : Some of the tourists who come to Munnar also visit this wild life sanctuary which is situated at a distance of 50 km from Munnar. Trekking can be done here. Special tree houses are also available deep inside the jungle. People who want to experience living in forest can choose to stay in one of the tree houses.  It is possible to go trekking to see Thoovanam waterfalls deep within the jungle. But this waterfall is not accessible by road.

Peechi wild life sanctuary. This place is located between two dams Peechi and Vazhani in Thrissur district in Kerala. Prior permission needs to be taken to go for trekking in this area. Many wild animals are found here. They are elephants, boar, deer, tiger, leopard etc.

Silent valley National Park: This national park is located in Palakkad district of Kerala. It is called silent valley because of the absence of sound made by Cicadas that are found in other forests in Kerala.  Entry Fee and permission is required to enter this national park.

Idukki wild life sanctuary : This wild life sanctuary is located in Idukki district of Kerala. Idukki dam is also situated nearby. The animals found in this sanctuary include Jackal, Elephant, porcupine, wild boars, deer and langurs.

Thattekkad bird sanctuary : This bird sanctuary is approximately 45km from Cochin airport. This bird sanctuary has many rare birds. The best time to visit the bird sanctuary is early in the morning.
